The Wedding Ceremony: Many different ways to do it

The Wedding Ceremony is always a special moment for everyone that be supposed to be only in their lifetime. The meaning of the ceremonial is common to share their happiness to with their close families and friends. What is making a difference? The culture involves that make perspective to prepare wedding or the way to do it. I had the experience to know about the wedding in Western culture when my native friend from the United States (US) who was getting married several years ago. Three highlights that make them different between the US and Indonesia are sending cards, giving a gift, and accompanying from bridesmaids or groomsmen.

Sending cards are quite standard for western people compare to eastern one. When my friend got married, I got three cards from the US was bridal shower card, wedding invitation card, and thank you card. Although recently many young people follow to do bridal shower, they never actually sending a card, most of them just invite by sending a text message via WhatsApp or let you know by mobile phone. And the last one is the thank you card to show their appreciation to you, for example sending a gift to the couples. Compared to my country, Indonesia, I ever just got and only wedding invitation card. We are rarely to say thank you for sending a card.

Giving a gift is the second difference between two cultures. When I got the wedding invitation card, I saw there was information about the blog of the couples. When I saw it, mostly it explained the story of the couples and their close friends. One thing is the most important information was the links that inform you the gifts that couple would be like to have it for example glass, plates or cooking pan. If other guests already purchased it, you need to find another thing that they still did not give away. In Indonesia, we rarely to gift things except sometimes close family give the gold jewelry. Most of them, usually give the money in the sealed envelope. And guests can give any money depend on their efforts, but mostly there are minimum amounts among their circles of society.

The third one is accompanying from bridesmaids or groomsmen. Although it is getting popular these days, not many of the couples will have many bridesmaid or groomsmen beside them. If they have it, maybe they just have it only one to three. From the several movies that I watched, bridesmaids have the most important one to help the preparation of the wedding until the day. In my country, Indonesia although several couples still use it, they just need the bridesmaid help on the ceremony day.

The way of the preparation of the wedding ceremony can differ from one culture to the other one such as sending cards, giving a gift and accompanying from bridesmaid or groomsmen. Otherwise, the essence of the event is the same is to enjoy their unforgettable moment once in a lifetime with their loved one. The differences between them enrich our knowledge and growing our respect of differential culture. It is a momentum to learn other cultures and appreciate diversity.

TRY IT, YOU NEVER KNOW

Do you ever watch the singing contest which the popular recently? There are many of them that we saw on the television, such as Indonesian Idol, AFI, American Idol, The Voice and so on. Before the real contest begins, they showed how the judges selected the participant’s competition. One of the most interesting was the auditions who joined the event had a horrible voice, but they have other beliefs. We tend to laugh and give comments such as “Why do they still think about joining the contest?”. Could you ever imagine it happened to the people who mentioned or laughed were your friends or families or relatives? It happened to me when I was Junior High School.

Every time, I watch the movie like that, I remembered myself a long time ago. One of my friend’s classmates asked me to accompany her to join a sing competition contest.  At the time, I just replied, “Why not? Let’s do it.” The value of the friendship was made your friends happy, and it will be good for you too. Also, I never know what I want to do or interested. The price of competition’s entry was reasonable, and perhaps I will be a famous artist someday. All of the thoughts were just came out before I accepted my friend’s offering.

Several songs that already prepared by a committee, and we need to pick one of them. In the two weeks before the contest, we need to test a voice, and a board knew which pitches that we sang. I chose what my friend picked, and the title of the song is Tegar – which was popular at the time by Rosa. I never thought that I was an inexperienced young girl would join this competition compared to my friend who practiced vocal in the formal course. Otherwise, I believe that I need to practice the song until the day of competition was coming. I did not think about “what if – What if I fail? What if people laughed at me? What if I will be ashamed to do this?” Instead, I was a smooth feeling and had a bigger optimistic.

I never understand how to be a good singer. I just imagine myself that I need to sing like an artist. I took my old microphone which has a long cable around 90 centimeters and connected to the DVD which has a CD in it. I tried to practice it with turned off the voice from the artist, and instead my voice will hear out loud. Sometimes, my neighbors at my age were coming to sing the same song. I did not receive feedback from the people which one was bad and which things that I need to improve on. In addition, I did not care about the other people’s comment, and I did not need them.

The event was coming, and I wore a bright gray dress that I loved and trendy at the time because it was millennium year in 2000. My body was shaking when I heard many beautiful voices was singing by all contestants. I hoped that I could turn time that I did not want to join this competition. I felt that I am not ready enough. The master of a ceremony called my number, and I remembered my feet went away step by step to the stairs into the stage which was not big enough. The stage is not a fancy stage; there was no lighting and just a keyboard with a good sound system. The ambiance was hot because a lot of people surround the stage. And then, I started to sing introduction part and immediately it just stopped until the lyrics came to refren. I could not remember the remain lyrics, and I did not finish my song. I stood up in front of hundreds of audiences were watching me.  I felt intimidated or it just my thoughts.

I did not remember what happened in the last part, maybe because it was a humiliating experience. I directly went home and said to myself “Never again join the sing competition.” When I backed to my hometown, every time I open my childhood album, I always embarrassed on saw that picture. A young girl who thought she had a beautiful voice, but not. At least, one thing I know – sing is not my thing, and that’s way I can practice my other activities – dancing.  If you have something, you just need to try on, because you never know. If you failed, no worries at least you did not need to go to that thing again.

Hi my friend!

Hi my friend!

I am wondering where you are..

I never heard about you anymore..

I used to know your stories and your secrets..

And I think..

It seems those things will never happen again..

Don’t let the ego make us suffering a little bit longer..

Just say some words that you are alright there.. And it’s more than enough..

Mokmok’s Birthday

Mokmok celebrated his 24th birthday with us (Monika and Felly) last month. Sorry for the lately report. May the GREAT LORD shower you with many blessings throughout the coming year.
Mokmok is our senior high school classmate. He is kinda humorous, kind, handsome (his girlfriend likes to call him ‘Lee Min Hoo’), and silly. If you meet him at first time, he will act like a cool guy.

Saturday, 5th March 2011.
Felly texted me. Mokmok invited us for a birthday gathering at Central Park.

Sunday, 6th March 2011.
Mokmok, Felly, and I gathered to celebrate his birthday at Nanny’s Pavillon, Central Park. We shared many things about life, job, relationship, and others. We really miss our peer group: Sherly, Jonat, and Linda. We wish all of you could be there with us last month. Many thanks to Mokmok who choosed Nanny’s. Cozy place, Nice food, and excellent service.

Birthday Theme: All About Pasta!! :p

My Nephew Carter Sausage. IDR 39.
The white sauce was similar to milk cream. So YUMMY!! Felly likes penne, the other form of pasta, beside spaghetty and fettucine.

Nanny’s Cocktail Blueberry. IDR 40.
The cocktail has 2 choices, blueberry and mango. Mokmok and I choosed the blueberry one because of the big number of people ordered this flavour. It tasted good but it is not more refreshing than mango.

Kimberly Green Sausage. IDR 39.
The sausage tasted great.

Uncle Harold Steak. IDR 39.
Mokmok recommended this steak to me. The taste was good like spicy, but too loud. It takes several time for me to chew the meat. Perfect for spicy pasta!

Thank you, Mok, for this lovely gathering. Hope we could spend more time together for sharing many things. Have a blessed age!
